Murano Glass comes from Murano,
that is an island of Venice.
For hundreds of years the glass industry of Venice has had its center on
Murano, and gave work to the major part of its occupants.
Glass in all the different forms - the curious souvenir for tourism; the gorgeous
glassware; the incredible chandeliers of sculptures of all styles are
just a small variety of glass products made here.
Murano glass is well known for its clearness and brilliance,
while its labor force is noted for being some of the best in the World.
Murano glass beads is a sector of this glass industry. About 100 people
talented from its work force.
The art of bead making is not an easy skill: one cannot just sit down and
produce. It takes years of experience to be a
"maestro" of beads.
Traditional floral and murrine beads continue to
be made, but there are trends towards new fantasy beads as well. All beads use
the time honored old ways of making beads, but the bead maker
using their skills are forever refreshing, creating new combinations and shades
of colors.
In that way the bead makers ability goes along with their creativity. The
source of their creativity may come from Venice itself: reflections in water, a
magic mirror world.
Often at my shows I am asked, "Is this Murano glass?" and I am one
of the honored few who can honestly say "Yes, this is Murano
Glass.".
